2012 “Pet Matters” Seminar Series Schedule

Pet Matters Seminar SeriesNow in our 7th year, the Pet Matters Seminar Series is held on the 3rd Sunday of the month, March through September, at 2:00 p.m. in our lobby.  Always free and open to the public, although reservations are requested.  Parking is available in the circular drive in front of the main building just past the white farmhouse.  Additional parking is located on the south side of the building.  Tours offered for newcomers and returning guests alike!

March 18th    Rehab 101: Physical Rehabilitation for your Pets with Animalia Health & Wellness

Joining us to kick off our 2012 Pet Matters Seminar Series is Tammy Perkins, DVM, from Animalia Health & Wellness for Animals.  Dr. Perkins is certified in Canine Rehabilitation, Equine Rehabilitation, and Medical Veterinary Acupuncture, and will soon be certified in Veterinary Chiropractic. Her discussion will cover new procedures and opportunities for your pets’ physical therapy including the Underwater Treadmill & Theraputic Lasar treatment.

April 15th        Fostering Rescued Dogs with MTGRR

Do you long to have a dog, but are concerned with the cost of care, a busy lifestyle, traveling, or other things that limit your ability to have your own pet?  Rescue organizations need you!   Sarah Sherck, President of  Middle Tennessee Golden Retriever Rescue will join us to explain how you, as a foster home, can have all the benefits of having a dog with none of the costs, along with that is a built-in support network for any needs that come up.  Fostering a dog may seem like a formidable task, but it’s a very tangible way to make a difference.  The foster volunteer gets to spend time with a special dog, and the foster dog gets a break from kennel life and a second chance at becoming a cherished pet.  Everyone benefits!

May 20th    Cat Behavior with Pam Johnson-Bennett

Join us as we welcome back popular guest speaker Pam Johnson-Bennett.  Pam is a Certified Animal Behavior Consultant and one of the most well-known experts on feline behavior.  She is a clinical member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants as well as being the Founder and Chair of the IAABC Cat Division.  The author of seven award-winning books on cat behavior and training, she also serves on the advisory board for Tree House Animal Foundation and the PR committee for Winn Feline Foundation.

June 17th         Behavior, Socialization & Training For Your Dog with Jon Stolzer

Jon Stolzer is an expert Canine Behaviorist and Training Specialist and the owner and founder of Canine Inc. He is a graduate of Texas’s Triple Crown Academy, the top canine behavior and training school in the country. His “Stolzer Method” is a uniquely successful training concept which uses each dog’s individual personality as the basis for their obedience training. Jon’s expertise has been tapped by Mars Pet Care, the largest pet care company in the US, and his Protection Dogs are sought after throughout the country. His “Lifestyles Obedience Classes” are held weekly at The Farm at Natchez Trace.

July 15th         The Senior Pet with Laura Pfeffer, DVM, and Mark Waldrop, DVM

Thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, pets are living longer than ever before. However, with this increased lifespan comes an increase in the types of ailments that can afflict senior pets. Laura Pfeffer, DVM, of Little House Animal Hospital, will discuss the variety of conditions and diseases that senior dogs can face, including: weight and mobility changes; osteoarthritis; kidney, heart, and liver disease; tumors and cancers; hormone disorders such as diabetes and thyroid imbalance; and many others.  Mark Waldrop, DVM, founder and owner of The Nashville Cat Clinic, will be on hand to discuss our aging feline pets, including information about nutrition, common diseases and conditions, and how to keep your cat happy and healthy in their golden years.

August 19st         Creature Care Program with Shana King, Director, Lovie’s Legacy

Joining us for the first time for our seminar series is Shana King, Executive Director of Lovie’s Legacy, to share information about their “Creature Care” Program.  This wonderful education program is designed to teach young children about the basic needs of animals, being kind to animals, how to avoid being bitten and the many jobs in our community that incorporate animals.  Lovie’s Legacy has the proud distinction of being the only group approved to bring a live animal into Metro Schools to teach this program.

September 16th    Therapy Dogs: Hear From an Expert/ Hear from an Owner with Linda Brewer

Welcome back to Linda Brewer, Vice Chairperson of the Board of Directors and Head Screener, for Therapy ARC.  Linda shares insightful information on what it takes for your pet to become a therapy dog.  Also joining us again is Sarah Jane Mitchell, owner of Greta, a therapy dog just starting the program.  Sarah Jane’s first therapy dog, Q-bert, served for more than 14 years.  Prior to her retirement, Q-bert’s accomplishments included serving at Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center and Harris Hilman Special School.  Sarah Jane will share information from the perspective of a therapy dog owner, as well as describing with some of the rewards and challenges you can expect.
